Two Generations Connected to Río Lagartos
Birding Yucatán brings together Diego Núñez and Andrea Núñez, two local nature guides from Río Lagartos with a shared connection to the birds, wetlands and wildlife of the Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve.
Our approach is simple: every experience should reflect the interests of the people traveling with us and the natural conditions unfolding that day.
Rather than following the same route every time, we pay attention to habitat, season, weather, light and wildlife activity to create private experiences that feel personal and meaningful.
OUR STORY
A Family Story Rooted in Nature
For Diego, nature guiding in Río Lagartos has been a lifelong journey.
Over decades in the field, he has guided birdwatchers, photographers and nature travelers through mangroves, coastal lagoons, wetlands and surrounding habitats, developing an intimate understanding of the changing rhythms of the reserve.
Andrea grew up surrounded by that same landscape and by a family deeply connected to nature tourism in Río Lagartos.
Today, she brings a new generation to that story, developing her own relationship with guiding, wildlife interpretation and personalized nature experiences.
Together, Diego and Andrea combine experience, continuity and a shared respect for the natural environment.

Decades of Experience in the Field
Diego Núñez is a local naturalist and nature guide whose connection with Río Lagartos goes back decades.
His experience has been shaped by thousands of hours in the field observing birds, wildlife, seasonal movements and the changing conditions of the wetlands.
His guiding style is patient and observational, allowing guests time to understand not only what they are seeing, but why a species may be using a particular habitat or behaving in a certain way.

ANDREA NÚÑEZ
A New Generation of Local Nature Guiding
Andrea Núñez grew up with Río Lagartos as part of everyday life.
The reserve, its birds, mangroves, flamingos and wildlife were not simply places she visited — they were part of the environment in which she was raised.
As a local nature guide, Andrea brings her own perspective to each experience, with a strong emphasis on personal attention, interpretation and helping visitors connect naturally with the landscape.
Her approach is especially suited to travelers who want to explore at a relaxed pace, learn about wildlife and enjoy a more personal experience of Río Lagartos.

OUR APPROACH
More Than a Checklist
Birdwatching can be about finding species, but for us it is also about understanding the landscape that supports them.
A mangrove channel, mudflat, salt marsh or coastal lagoon can tell us what birds may be present and why.
We encourage guests to slow down, listen, observe behavior and understand how tides, weather, season and habitat influence what we encounter.
For photographers, this may mean waiting.
For birders, it may mean searching carefully for a particular species.
For families or first-time nature travelers, it may simply mean having time to ask questions and enjoy the experience without feeling rushed.

Wildlife Comes First
We believe nature tourism should never come at the expense of wildlife.
Animals are not fed, chased or intentionally disturbed to create a photograph or sighting.
Whenever necessary, we adjust distance, speed, route and time according to wildlife behavior and environmental conditions.
A meaningful encounter is one where the animal can continue behaving naturally.

The Ría Lagartos Biosphere Reserve brings together mangroves, coastal lagoons, mudflats, salt marshes, dunes and other habitats that support remarkable biodiversity.
Flamingos may be its best-known residents, but the region is also home to shorebirds, herons, raptors, migratory species, crocodiles and many other forms of wildlife.
